Meet Kat Chow, reporter, NPR’s “Code Switch”
What is your current job?
Reporter with NPR’s Code Switch
How did the NJC Scholarship help you reach your journalism goals?
The scholarship helped me pay bills and also take on unpaid internships (Journalism orgs: please pay your interns if you can; you’re limiting your intern pool if you don’t!)
What advice do you have to other students who want to succeed in journalism?
Consume as much journalism as possible and take note of what you really love, and how the good stuff is made, written or produced. Doing this — and closely following the work of individual journalists I found compelling — helped me understand how writers can grow and stretch into different beats over time, and how curiosities bloom into obsessions and expertise in the best ways possible.
