NJC Pizza Night at Mountlake Terrace High School on March 24
AAJA Seattle will be hosting a Northwest Journalists of Color (NJC) Scholarship Pizza Night in partnership with The Hawkeye at Mountlake Terrace High School.
The event will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 at MTHS (21801 44th Ave. W. in Mountlake Terrace), in room 130.
We will be providing information about the NJC Scholarship, which is open to high school seniors in Washington as well as college students who are Washington residents or enrolled in a college or university in Washington and pursuing journalism.
AAJA Seattle administers the scholarship and we are currently accepting applications through May 3. I have attached a PDF of the application, but an online version is also available on our chapter website at www.aajaseattle. org/scholarships (online applications are preferred).
While the scholarship is for high school seniors and older, we encourage journalism students of all ages and grades to attend the pizza night as we will be holding a Google Hangout with NJC scholarship recipient and former Seattle chapter member Kat Chow. Kat now works for NPR’s Code Switch in Washington, D.C. and focuses on journalism that looks at “overlapping themes of race, ethnicity and culture, how they play out in our lives and communities and how all of this is shifting.” She will be discussing her work and the importance of diversity in journalism, both in coverage as well as in newsrooms themselves.
In addition, we will have special guest Peter Sessum, another NJC scholarship recipient and current chapter member. Peter currently works as marketing media content manager of the Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington. He will be in attendance to discuss his work as well as how NJC helped him as a student at UW.
This is a great opportunity for journalism students to meet and speak with working journalists, ask them questions and see what opportunities are out there for them, should they choose to pursue a career in the field.
Again, we would love for you and as many of your students as possible to join us (it’s free and there will be pizza!). If you and/or any of your students are able to attend, please RSVP to AAJA Seattle Secretary Samantha Pak at sammipak@gmail.com by Monday, March 23 with about how many people you will be bringing so we know how much food to order.
Thank you and hope to see you there!
