Micro-grants for AAJA Seattle members impacted by COVID-19

Newsrooms and independent journalists across the country have been impacted by the long and short term effects of COVID-19 on the industry.  To help ease the financial hardship this is causing, AAJA Seattle is making micro-grants of up to $500 available to its members. 

Eligible applicants will have worked full-time as journalists in Washington state within six months of applying for assistance, and should be AAJA members in good standing.

We’re celebrating aspiring student journalists in Washington state who have won this year’s Northwest Journalists of Color Scholarships, the AAJA Seattle Founders Scholarship, the NJC-PNW Guild Conference Scholarship and the Northwest Journalists of Color-KIRO 7 Internship. A reception will be held at Hive Media Lab on Wednesday, May 15 at 6 p.m. Please RSVP here.

We’ll hear from keynote speaker and radio journalist Esmy Jimenez, and we’ll also invite each of the scholarship winners to briefly speak about their career ambitions.

Finally, a special thank you to this year’s judges: Lori Matsukawa, Jovelle Tamayo, and Corinne Chin for their help with judging the Journalists of Color reporting scholarship and Founders scholarship; and Danny Gawlowski, Ramon Dompor, Megan Farmer and Corinne Chin for their help judging the Visual Journalism scholarship; and the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild for their help judging and coordinating the NJC-PNW Guild Conference Scholarship.

Apply today for the Northwest Journalists of Color scholarships and the NJC-PNW Guild Conference Scholarship. The deadline to apply is March 29, 2019.

This year students may apply for:

  • Northwest Journalists of Color Reporting Scholarship — financial award for students interested in journalism.
  • Northwest Journalists of Color Visual Journalism Scholarship — camera equipment for a student interested in photography.
  • AAJA Seattle Founders’ Scholarship (open to students and recent graduates) — registration for the AAJA National Convention in Houston, plus financial assistance for travel and room.
  • NJC-PNW Guild Conference Scholarship — up to $1000 in costs to attend an approved journalism conference.
