Do you have your tickets for the 2015 AAJA Seattle Chef Showcase?

We’re hosting this great event for the second year in a row on Aug. 10 at Columbia Tower Club. Members of AAJA Seattle and SPJ can get their tickets for $30 — that’s half the price of door tickets — through July 31 Aug. 3.

This year, our featured chefs are:

  • Prometheus Brown and Chera Amlag of Food & Sh*t

  • Yenvy Pham of Pho Bac

Sorry about the late notice, everyone. We’re going to squeeze in one more Dim Sum Saturday event before the holiday season at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 26.

Enjoy breakfast with chapter president, Mai Hoang, who will be here all the way from Yakima, and with other AAJA members.

If you haven’t been to an event recently, dim sum is a great and easy way to reconnect. The more, the merrier — friends, co-workers, former co-workers, significant others and kids more than welcome.

We’re meeting at at New Hong Kong (it used to be known as New Kowloon), 900 South Jackson Street, Seattle, WA 98104, in the International District.

We’ll all split the check. Dim sum typically runs about $10-$15 per person.

NJC Almnus Represents Washington At National Teacher of the Year Celebration

Jay Maebori, the 2011 Washington Teacher of the Year, is a NJC alumni and Kentwood High School journalism teacher. He was celebrated in September at an event at the Experience Music Project (read about it here in the Northwest Asian Weekly), but look who is just behind Pres. Obama when the White House hosted the National Teacher of the Year Award.

Run for chapter board! Deadline is Friday

It’s election time, and it’s another chance for AAJA Seattle members to make a big difference!

Seattle chapter officers meet about once every two months, and it’s a chance to be involved directly building our community through workshops, the Northwest Journalists of Color scholarship and, of course, the annual Lunar New Year Banquet.

Our chapter board works as a team, and we support each other. These roles require a time commitment, but as any board member will tell you, the commitment is manageable. We all feel a great satisfaction in the chapter’s membership growth (up 25% over last year). Students and professionals see value in what we do — and now it’s your chance to contribute your talents, network and insights to our chapter!

Positions up for election this year are:

– Vice president for member programs: This person takes the lead on Northwest Journalists of Color scholarship and workshops. This is an interim one-year position. Must be a full member.

– Vice president for events: This person takes the lead on Lunar New Year Banquet & Silent Auction and networking events. This is a two-year term. Must be a full member.

– Treasurer: This person is responsible for managing the chapter’s finances, processing donations and filing reports with National. This is a two-year term. Must be a full or associate member.

The deadline to nominate yourself or another person is this Friday, Oct. 15.

After nominating deadline has passed and candidates’ eligibility is confirmed, the chapter Secretary will send members their ballot via e-mail using Survey Monkey.

Chapter members must cast their votes by Oct. 29. The chapter will report the names of newly elected officers to National by Nov. 4.

AAJA Seattle votes for change — and now we need leaders!

The AAJA Seattle chapter board recently had our full members vote on a proposed change to the structure of the board.

The full members who voted approved the proposed change 17-1. Starting in 2010, our new chapter board configuration will be the following:

Up to seven voting members, each serving two-year terms:
– President
– Vice president for member programs (would be responsible for NJC, mentoring, professional workshops)
– Vice president for events (would be responsible for Lunar New Year, social mixers, and social networking)
– Treasurer
– Secretary
– National Board Rep(s)

The vice presidents would run for two year terms which would be staggered.

Now, we need people to fill these positions. We are taking nominations for the following positions:
– President
– Vice President for Member Programs
– Vice President for Events
– Secretary
– National board representative

The people who hold all these board positions need to be full members of the Seattle chapter of AAJA as of 2009.

You also can use that e-mail to send any questions about the positions and their duties. We’d like to hear from people interested in these positions by Oct. 6.
